1940 Ford Coupe

This project is a '40 Ford Coupe Streetrod that we are doing a color change on.  We'll strip the Washington Blue down to bare metal and lay on a gloss black paint job that you will be able to see the color of your eyes in when we're done!

Follow our progress!  Oldest pictures are at the bottom of the page.

FINISHED!

All that blocksanding pays off as evident in the smooth lines reflecting in that gloss black.

Now the firewall is completely stripped of it's thick filler and paint, and ready for primer.

High build primer.

Stripping the customized area of the firewall confirmed our suspicions.  Thick filler was hiding bad patches and lousy welding.

After discussions, we determined that the original design of the upper firewall was worth keeping, as new repop firewalls are somewhat boring.  So we simply redid the original customization, only "better".

Every job dominoes into more than was planned.  In order to properly mask the door jambs, we needed to take out the cloth windlace.  The windlace is installed BEFORE the dash.  Out came the dash.

I mentioned before about projects suffering from the domino effect..  The firewall showed definate evidence of bondo abuse, so out came the engine so that we could make a quality repair.

Here's the worst of what we found done by the previous builder.  This patch reshaped the area where the rear bumper bracket came through the body.  This patch was completely filled with polyester filler.

We cut the tabs off, and properly welded in a new section.

After welding in a proper patch, this area was leaded to finish the necessary bodywork.

The Beginning!

Stripping the body with chemical paint stripper.  Doing it this way reminds me why I like to take things to the media blaster.....
